Chile Underground Copper Mine Haulage & Hoisting System Upgrade Project
Project Overview
An underground copper mine in Chile, South America, undertook an infrastructure upgrade to improve its underground ore transportation and mine hoisting systems. The project involved the installation of new rail tracks for underground mine cars, wear-resistant liners for ore storage bins, and a hoisting winch system for vertical material handling.
Due to the demanding operating conditions and strict safety requirements of underground mining, the customer required reliable mining-grade materials with complete inspection documentation.
The material supply package included 38 kg/m U71Mn mining rails, AR400 wear-resistant steel plates, galvanized mining hoisting wire ropes, S355JR angle steel, and S460 flat steel.
All supplied products were required to meet relevant mining safety specifications, with load testing and non-destructive testing documentation provided as applicable.
The project required coordinated sourcing of multiple material categories to support the installation and commissioning of the underground transportation and hoisting systems.

Project Requirements
Underground copper mining operations require durable materials capable of supporting continuous ore transportation, equipment loading, and material handling.
For this project, the main technical requirements included:
- Rail Track Reliability: Mining rails with controlled straightness and dimensional accuracy for underground mine car transportation.
- Wear Resistance: AR400 steel plates for ore bin liners exposed to repeated ore impact and abrasive wear.
- Hoisting Safety: Galvanized steel wire ropes with verified breaking force for mine hoisting winch applications.
- Structural Support: Steel sections for rail fixing brackets and ore bin reinforcement connections.
- Inspection Documentation: Load testing, non-destructive inspection, and relevant material quality certificates to support mine safety acceptance.
- Coordinated Material Delivery: Supply of multiple steel categories to meet the underground infrastructure upgrade schedule.

Project Solution
1. U71Mn Mining Rails for Underground Haulage Tracks
The upgraded underground transportation system required dedicated mining rails to support continuous mine car movement.
For this application, 38 kg/m U71Mn mining steel rails were supplied in standard 12-meter fixed lengths, with a total quantity of 124 tons.
The rails were specified according to GB/T 11264 and were used for the newly constructed underground mine car transportation tracks.
Rail straightness was a key acceptance requirement, as dimensional consistency helps support proper track alignment and stable operation.
The supplied rails successfully passed the project’s straightness acceptance checks, supporting installation of the underground haulage system.
2. AR400 Wear-Resistant Steel Plates for Ore Bin Liners
Ore storage bins in underground copper mines are exposed to frequent material discharge, impact, and abrasive contact.
To address these operating conditions, the project included 87 tons of AR400 wear-resistant steel plates, supplied in 12 × 1800 × 8000 mm dimensions.
The plates were used as protective liners for ore storage bins, helping reduce direct wear on the underlying equipment structure.
AR400 wear-resistant steel is commonly selected for applications where abrasion resistance is important, including mining liners and material handling equipment.
In this project, the installed liners provided resistance to ore impact and abrasive wear, meeting the customer’s operational requirements.
3. Galvanized Steel Wire Ropes for Mine Hoisting
The underground hoisting winch system required mining wire ropes with verified load-bearing performance.
The supplied rope specification included:
- Diameter: 32 mm
- Construction: 6×37+FC
- Surface protection: Galvanized
- Total supply quantity: 26 tons
The 6×37+FC construction uses multiple wire strands with a fiber core, providing flexibility for wire rope applications.
Breaking force verification formed a critical part of the customer’s acceptance procedure.
The supplied wire ropes successfully passed the required breaking force acceptance checks, supporting the installation and operation of the mine hoisting system.
4. Structural Steel for Rail Supports and Ore Bin Reinforcement
In addition to mining rails and equipment-related materials, structural steel components were supplied for supporting infrastructure.
A total of 41 tons of S355JR equal angle steel, measuring ∠140 × 14 mm in 12-meter lengths, was supplied for rail fixing brackets.
The project also required 28 tons of S460 flat steel, measuring 120 × 16 mm, for ore bin reinforcement connection components.
These materials supported the construction and reinforcement work associated with the mine transportation upgrade.

5. Material Quality and Inspection Support
For underground mining applications, material traceability and inspection documentation are essential elements of project acceptance.
The customer required load and non-destructive inspection certificates as applicable to the supplied products.
The quality assurance scope focused on rail straightness verification, wire rope breaking force acceptance, material performance documentation, and compliance with the project’s mining safety requirements.
Coordinating these requirements across the different product categories helped support the customer’s inspection and installation process.
