Malaysia Offshore-to-Onshore Natural Gas Pipeline Project
Project Overview
A natural gas transmission pipeline project in Peninsular Malaysia required a comprehensive steel material supply solution for an offshore-to-onshore pipeline connection and its supporting station facilities.
The pipeline was designed for high-pressure natural gas transportation and passed through coastal areas with chloride-rich soil conditions. These environmental factors placed demanding requirements on pipeline strength, corrosion protection, weld integrity, and long-term operational reliability.
The project owner specified API 5L pipeline steel and required LSAW (Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded) pipes with internal FBE coating and external three-layer polyethylene (3PE) corrosion protection.
In addition to the main transmission pipeline, the project required ERW steel pipes, 316L stainless steel process piping, Cr-Mo pressure vessel plates, and nickel alloy tubing for supporting station equipment.
The supply package combined multiple material grades and international standards to meet the requirements of natural gas transmission and processing facilities.

Project Requirements
The project’s primary challenge was supplying high-strength pipeline materials suitable for high-pressure gas transmission in a coastal environment.
The customer established several critical procurement and quality requirements:
- High-strength pipeline steel: API 5L X70M LSAW pipes for the main natural gas transmission line.
- Corrosion protection: Internal FBE and external 3PE coatings for the main pipelin
- Weld quality verification: 100% radiographic testing (RT) and ultrasonic testing (UT) of welded pipes.
- Supporting station materials: 316L stainless steel piping, SA387 Gr22 pressure vessel plates, and Alloy 825 nickel alloy tubing.
- Inspection documentation: Complete material and inspection records for owner and third-party acceptance.
- Integrated material supply: Coordinated procurement of different steel pipe, plate, and alloy material specifications.
These requirements called for a coordinated supply solution covering both the main transmission pipeline and auxiliary station equipment.
Steel Material Supply Details
The project involved five categories of steel and alloy materials, with a total supply quantity of 703 metric tons.
| Material | Specification | Grade / Standard | Quantity |
| LSAW Steel Pipe | OD 1016 × 17.5 mm, 12 m length, internal FBE + external 3PE coating | API 5L X70M / API 5L | 426 Tons |
| ERW Welded Steel Pipe | OD 219 × 6.0 mm, 12 m length | API 5L X52 / API 5L | 124 Tons |
| 316L Seamless Stainless Steel Pipe | OD 114.3 × 6.02 mm | 316L / ASTM A312 | 48 Tons |
| Cr-Mo Pressure Vessel Steel Plate | 20 × 2000 × 12000 mm | SA387 Gr22 / ASME SA387 | 89 Tons |
| Alloy 825 Nickel Alloy Pipe | OD 76.2 × 5.16 mm | Alloy 825 / ASTM B423 | 16 Tons |
The material package covered high-strength transmission pipes, supporting pipeline materials, pressure equipment steel plates, and corrosion-resistant process piping.
Project Supply Solution
1. API 5L X70M LSAW Pipes for High-Pressure Natural Gas Transmission
The main pipeline required 426 tons of API 5L X70M longitudinal submerged arc welded steel pipes, with an outside diameter of 1016 mm and a wall thickness of 17.5 mm.
These pipes were supplied in 12-meter fixed lengths to support the construction of the natural gas transmission system.
API 5L X70M was specified for its high-strength characteristics, making it suitable for demanding pipeline engineering applications where mechanical strength and material consistency are important.
The LSAW manufacturing process provided a practical solution for large-diameter pipeline requirements.
2. Internal FBE and External 3PE Corrosion Protection
The natural gas pipeline passed through chloride-rich coastal soil, creating a significant requirement for external corrosion protection.
To address these conditions, the main LSAW pipes were supplied with two protective coating systems:
- Internal FBE coating: Fusion-bonded epoxy coating applied to the pipe’s internal surface.
- External 3PE coating: Three-layer polyethylene protection designed to provide a barrier against soil moisture and corrosive environmental exposure.
The combined coating configuration supported the project’s requirements for pipeline corrosion protection in the coastal environment.
Coating adhesion performance was verified during project inspection and met the required acceptance criteria.

3. Supporting Steel Pipes for Pipeline and Station Applications
In addition to the main LSAW transmission pipes, 124 tons of API 5L X52 ERW welded steel pipes were supplied.
These pipes featured an outside diameter of 219 mm, a wall thickness of 6.0 mm, and a fixed length of 12 meters.
For station process piping, the supply package included 48 tons of 316L seamless stainless steel pipes manufactured to ASTM A312 specifications.
The use of different pipe materials enabled the project to address varying mechanical and corrosion-resistance requirements across its transmission and station systems.
4. Pressure Vessel and Corrosion-Resistant Alloy Materials
The supporting station equipment required additional materials beyond conventional carbon steel piping.
The supply package included:
SA387 Gr22 Cr-Mo Pressure Vessel Steel Plates
A total of 89 tons of ASME SA387 Gr22 chromium-molybdenum steel plates were supplied for station pressure equipment applications.
The specified plate dimensions were 20 × 2000 × 12000 mm.
Alloy 825 Nickel Alloy Pipes
For highly corrosive sampling lines at the station, 16 tons of Alloy 825 nickel alloy pipes were supplied to ASTM B423 specifications.
The pipes featured an outside diameter of 76.2 mm and a wall thickness of 5.16 mm.
Alloy 825 provides corrosion-resistant material characteristics for process environments where conventional carbon steel may not meet the service requirements.
Quality Control and Third-Party Inspection
Quality inspection was a critical part of the project supply process, particularly for welded pipeline products intended for high-pressure natural gas transportation.
The project required 100% RT and UT non-destructive testing of welded pipes to verify weld integrity.
The inspection process focused on the specified quality requirements for pipeline materials and protective coatings.
- 100% RT and UT Inspection.Welded pipes underwent radiographic and ultrasonic testing in accordance with the project’s inspection requirements.
- Coating Adhesion Verification. The corrosion protection coating passed the specified adhesion acceptance requirements.
- Complete Documentation Delivery. The required material and inspection documentation package was submitted for project acceptance.
- Owner and Third-Party Acceptance. The supplied materials passed the owner and third-party inspection on the first submission.
Project Results
The project successfully completed material supply, inspection, and acceptance requirements for the offshore-to-onshore natural gas transmission pipeline.
All welded pipes underwent 100% RT and UT inspection, while the corrosion protection coatings met the required adhesion criteria.
The complete documentation package supported successful owner and third-party acceptance without the need for repeated inspection submissions.
Following project completion, the pipeline was successfully commissioned and entered stable natural gas transmission operation.
The integrated supply of high-strength LSAW pipes, ERW pipes, stainless steel process materials, pressure vessel plates, and nickel alloy piping supported the construction and commissioning of the pipeline and associated facilities.
