Southeast Asia Food Can Manufacturing Group Project
Project Overview
A leading canned food manufacturer in Southeast Asia required a reliable supply of tinplate and tin-free steel materials for its large-scale metal packaging production operations. The manufacturer specialized in producing packaging for canned fruits, fish and meat products, as well as easy-open can ends.
To support high-volume food can manufacturing, the customer selected Electrolytic Tinplate (ETP) for can body applications and Tin-Free Steel (TFS/ECCS) for easy-open end production.
The materials needed to meet strict requirements for surface quality, coating consistency, stamping performance, dimensional accuracy, and food-contact testing.
The project also required precision slitting services and accompanying food-contact test reports to support the manufacturer’s production and quality acceptance procedures.
A total of 280 tons of ETP tinplate and TFS/ECCS materials were supplied for the customer’s can manufacturing operations.
Project Requirements
Food can manufacturing requires metal packaging materials with consistent mechanical properties, reliable coating quality, and stable forming performance.
For this project, the customer established several key procurement and quality requirements:
- Food-Contact Compliance: Materials and associated testing documentation supporting applicable EU food-contact requirements.
- Surface Quality: Controlled surface defects, including pinholes and other imperfections that could affect can manufacturing.
- Coating Uniformity: Consistent tin or chromium-based coating quality according to material specifications.
- Precision Slitting: Accurate strip widths to support automated production and forming equipment.
- Stamping Performance: Stable material behavior during high-speed forming operations without cracking.
- Corrosion Resistance: Finished cans capable of meeting the manufacturer’s long-term corrosion testing requirements.
- Quality Documentation: Food-contact migration test reports and relevant material inspection records accompanying the supplied products.
The supplier needed to coordinate different strip widths, thicknesses, coating specifications, and temper grades for multiple packaging applications.

Project Material Solutions
1. ETP Tinplate for Food Can Body Manufacturing
The manufacturer required electrolytic tinplate for the production of metal packaging used in canned fruit, fish, and meat products.
For this application, two specifications of ETP electrolytic tinplate were supplied.
The first specification included 118 tons of MR grade tinplate, with a thickness of 0.22 mm, width of 832 mm, and #100 tin coating designation.
The second specification included 76 tons of DR-8 tinplate, with a thickness of 0.25 mm, width of 965 mm, and #75 tin coating designation.
Electrolytic tinplate combines a cold-rolled steel substrate with an electrolytically deposited tin coating, making it an established material for metal packaging applications.
For this project, the supplied materials supported can body manufacturing requiring controlled surface quality and consistent forming performance.
The materials passed the specified pinhole and coating uniformity inspections, supporting reliable processing on the customer’s can production lines.

2. TFS/ECCS for Easy-Open Can Ends
In addition to can body materials, the manufacturer required tin-free steel for easy-open can end production.
The project specified TFS/ECCS (Electrolytic Chromium/Chromium Oxide Coated Steel) in two different thicknesses and widths.
The supply included:
- 54 tons of 0.20 mm × 806 mm MR grade TFS/ECCS.
- 32 tons of 0.18 mm × 712 mm DR-9 TFS/ECCS.
TFS/ECCS uses a chromium-based surface coating system instead of a conventional tin coating.
It is used in a range of coated metal packaging components where appropriate downstream lacquer systems, forming processes, and corrosion protection requirements are applied.
The supplied TFS/ECCS materials supported easy-open end manufacturing, with material performance meeting the customer’s specified high-speed stamping requirements.
3. Precision Slitting for Automated Can Manufacturing
Dimensional accuracy was an important consideration because the manufacturer operated automated, high-volume production equipment.
The project required four different strip widths:
- 832 mm and 965 mm for ETP tinplate.
- 806 mm and 712 mm for TFS/ECCS.
The material supply incorporated precision slitting according to the specified dimensions.
Accurate strip preparation supported compatibility with the customer’s production equipment and reduced the need for additional material preparation before forming.
4. Stable Forming Performance for High-Speed Stamping
High-speed can manufacturing requires materials with consistent forming characteristics.
The supplied ETP and TFS/ECCS materials were selected according to the customer’s specified steel grades, thicknesses, and temper requirements.
The materials successfully supported high-speed stamping operations without cracking under the project’s manufacturing conditions.
This helped the customer maintain qualified forming performance across its packaging production applications.

Quality Control and Food-Contact Testing
Material inspection was a central requirement of this food packaging supply project.
The customer required inspection documentation covering surface quality, coating performance, forming behavior, and food-contact testing.
Surface Pinhole Inspection
The supplied metal packaging materials passed the required surface pinhole inspections.
The inspection results met the customer’s material acceptance criteria.
Coating Uniformity Verification
The ETP and TFS/ECCS materials underwent the required coating quality verification.
The coating uniformity results satisfied the project specifications, supporting subsequent forming and packaging production.
Food-Contact Migration Testing
The project required food-contact migration test reports to accompany material delivery.
The supplied materials met the applicable testing acceptance criteria specified by the customer.
These reports supported the manufacturer’s assessment of materials intended for food packaging applications.
High-Speed Stamping Verification
The materials demonstrated stable performance during the customer’s high-speed forming operations.
The finished stamped components met the project’s no-cracking requirements.
Finished Can Corrosion Testing
The completed canned food packaging products passed the manufacturer’s long-term corrosion resistance testing.
This verified satisfactory performance of the finished packaging system under the specified testing conditions.
Project Results
The integrated ETP and TFS/ECCS material supply successfully supported the manufacturer’s canned food packaging production lines.
The project achieved the following results:
- Qualified Surface Quality: Material pinhole inspections met the required acceptance criteria.
- Consistent Coating Performance: Coating uniformity testing was completed successfully.
- Reliable High-Speed Forming: Tinplate and tin-free steel materials supported stamping operations without cracking.
- Food-Contact Testing Compliance: The required migration testing met the specified acceptance criteria.
- Finished Packaging Corrosion Performance: Completed cans passed the manufacturer’s long-term corrosion resistance tests.
- Stable Production Supply: The supplied materials continued supporting the customer’s can manufacturing production lines.
The project demonstrated the value of coordinated material sourcing, precision slitting, and quality verification for high-volume food packaging manufacturing.
