Thailand 30MW Biomass Power Plant EPC Project

10-10, 2026

Project Overview

A 30MW biomass power plant EPC project in northeastern Thailand required a comprehensive range of steel, alloy, and electrical materials for the construction of a new biomass-fired power generation facility. The project included a biomass boiler system, steam turbine equipment, structural steel buildings, and supporting power transmission and distribution facilities.
As a key component of the power generation system, the biomass boiler required pressure-retaining materials manufactured in accordance with ASME standards. High-temperature steam pipelines also required chromium-molybdenum (Cr-Mo) alloy seamless tubes suitable for elevated-temperature service.
In addition to boiler materials, the project required grain-oriented electrical steel for transformer cores, copper busbars for power distribution, structural H beams for the main power plant framework, and nickel-based alloy plates for high-temperature heat exchanger components.
The supply package covered 398 tons of steel, alloy, and copper materials, supporting multiple stages of power plant equipment manufacturing and construction.

Project Requirements

The biomass power plant involved several interconnected engineering systems, each with different material performance requirements.
The EPC contractor required a supplier capable of coordinating materials for boiler pressure components, high-temperature piping, electrical equipment, and structural construction.
The key requirements included:

  • ASME Compliance: Boiler pressure-retaining plates and heat-resistant alloy tubes manufactured to the specified ASME material standards.
  • High-Temperature Performance: Cr-Mo alloy materials suitable for high-temperature steam system applications.
  • Non-Destructive Testing: 100% ultrasonic testing (UT) of the specified pressure plates and alloy tubes.
  • Electrical Performance: CRGO electrical steel meeting the specified core-loss requirements for transformer manufacturing.
  • Structural Reliability: S355JR structural H beams complying with EN 10025 for the main power plant framework.
  • Material Documentation: Complete material certificates and inspection reports for EPC contractor review.
  • Integrated Procurement: Coordinated supply of different material categories to support project construction and acceptance.

These requirements called for an integrated material solution covering mechanical, structural, thermal, and electrical applications.

Project Material Solutions

1. SA387 Gr22 Cr-Mo Steel Plates for Biomass Boiler Components

The biomass boiler system required materials suitable for the pressure and temperature conditions associated with steam generation.
For this application, SA387 Gr22 chromium-molybdenum alloy steel plates were selected.
SA387 Gr22 is commonly used in elevated-temperature pressure equipment applications where strength and heat resistance are important considerations.
The project required 104 tons of SA387 Gr22 steel plates with dimensions of 16 × 1800 × 12000 mm, supplied according to ASME SA387.
The plates underwent the specified ultrasonic testing and were supplied with ASME material documentation to support boiler manufacturing and EPC inspection requirements.

2. SA213 T22 Seamless Alloy Tubes for High-Temperature Steam Systems

High-temperature steam pipelines were another critical part of the biomass power plant.
The project specified SA213 T22 heat-resistant chromium-molybdenum alloy seamless tubes for the steam system.
A total of 72 tons of seamless tubes were supplied in two sizes:

  •  Φ42 × 5 mm
  • Φ57 × 6 mm

The material selection addressed the need for heat-resistant alloy tubing under elevated-temperature operating conditions.
The tubes were supplied with the required inspection documentation and underwent 100% UT inspection as specified for the project.

3. CRGO Electrical Steel for Transformer Cores

The power transmission and distribution equipment required high-performance electrical steel for transformer core manufacturing.
The project included 46 tons of 27QG100 cold-rolled grain-oriented (CRGO) electrical steel coils, with a thickness of 0.27 mm and width of 1000 mm.
Grain-oriented electrical steel is designed to provide favorable magnetic properties along the rolling direction, making it suitable for transformer core applications.
The project required the supplied electrical steel to meet specified core-loss performance indicators.
The CRGO materials successfully met the project’s iron-loss acceptance requirements, supporting transformer equipment manufacturing and electrical system acceptance.

4. T2 Copper Busbars for Power Distribution

Reliable electrical conductivity was essential for the power distribution system of the biomass power plant.
The supply package included 28 tons of T2 copper busbars, manufactured in 10 × 100 mm dimensions and supplied in fixed 6-meter lengths.
The copper busbars were intended for power distribution busbar applications.
T2 copper offers high electrical conductivity and is widely used in electrical connection and distribution components.
The material package supported the construction of the plant’s associated power distribution facilities.

5. S355JR Structural H Beams for the Power Plant Framework

In addition to the boiler and electrical systems, the project required structural steel for the main power plant buildings.
The selected material was S355JR structural steel, supplied as HN400 × 200 × 8 × 13 mm H beams according to EN 10025.
A total of 136 tons of H beams were provided in fixed 12-meter lengths.
The structural steel package supported the construction of the main power plant framework and associated steel structure buildings.
By combining boiler, electrical, and structural materials into one supply package, the EPC contractor could coordinate procurement across different construction systems.

6. Alloy 800H Plates for High-Temperature Heat Exchanger Components

High-temperature heat exchanger components required an alloy material suitable for demanding thermal operating conditions.
The project specified Alloy 800H nickel-iron-chromium alloy plates for internal heat exchanger components.
A total of 12 tons of Alloy 800H plates were supplied in 10 × 1500 × 6000 mm dimensions according to ASTM B409.
Alloy 800H is designed for elevated-temperature service and offers resistance to various forms of high-temperature oxidation and corrosion, subject to the specific operating environment.
The material supported the fabrication of high-temperature heat exchanger internal components.

Quality Control and Material Inspection

Quality verification was an essential part of the biomass power plant’s material procurement process.
The project involved boiler pressure-retaining components, high-temperature alloy tubes, electrical steel, and structural materials, requiring different inspection and documentation procedures.

100% Ultrasonic Testing
According to the project requirements, the pressure-retaining steel plates and alloy tubes underwent 100% ultrasonic testing.
The inspection results met the specified acceptance requirements.

ASME Material Certification
The boiler steel plates and heat-resistant alloy tubes were supplied with the required ASME material certificates and inspection documentation.
These records supported material traceability and EPC contractor inspection.

Electrical Steel Performance Verification
The CRGO electrical steel was verified against the project’s specified iron-loss requirements.
The supplied material met the required performance indicators for transformer core applications.

EPC and Local Authority Acceptance
The material documentation and inspection results supported final review by the EPC contractor and local electrical authority.
The project successfully passed the required acceptance procedures on the first submission.
