Brazil 150kV Solar Power Substation Project

10-10, 2026

Project Overview

A large-scale solar photovoltaic power development in southeastern Brazil required a 150kV step-up substation to support electricity transmission from the solar generation facility to the power grid. The project included main power transformers, reactors, outdoor gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) supporting structures, grounding and conductive components, and auxiliary equipment.
To meet the technical requirements of the substation, different metallic materials were selected for electrical, structural, and auxiliary equipment applications.

Low-loss CRGO grain-oriented electrical steel was specified for main transformer cores, while CRNO non-grain-oriented electrical steel was required for auxiliary motor cores. High-conductivity T2 copper materials were selected for grounding and winding components, and ASTM A572 Gr50 structural steel was used for outdoor equipment supports.
The project also required SA516 Gr70 pressure vessel plates for energy storage buffer tanks and Alloy 625 nickel-based seamless tubes for corrosion-resistant sampling pipelines.
The complete procurement package covered 296 tons of electrical steel, copper, structural steel, pressure vessel steel, and nickel alloy materials, supporting the construction and commissioning of the solar power substation.

Project Requirements

As an important part of the photovoltaic power transmission infrastructure, the 150kV step-up substation required reliable electrical performance, mechanical strength, and long-term outdoor durability.
The project involved multiple material categories with different technical requirements:

  •  Low Core Loss: CRGO grain-oriented electrical steel for transformer cores, meeting specified iron-loss requirements.
  •  Magnetic Performance: CRNO non-grain-oriented electrical steel for auxiliary motor core manufacturing.
  •  High Electrical Conductivity: T2 copper strips and wires for grounding and winding conductive components.
  •  Structural Strength: ASTM A572 Gr50 H beams and channel steel for outdoor electrical equipment supports.
  •  Pressure Equipment Materials: SA516 Gr70 steel plates for energy storage buffer tanks.
  •  Corrosion Resistance: Alloy 625 nickel-based seamless tubes for sampling pipelines.
  •  Quality Documentation: Third-party test results and complete material documentation for project acceptance.

The supplier needed to coordinate different material specifications, dimensions, and inspection requirements while supporting the overall EPC construction schedule.

Project Material Solutions

1. Low-Loss CRGO Electrical Steel for Main Transformer Cores

The main transformer system required electrical steel with low core losses to support efficient voltage transformation and electricity transmission.
For this application, the project selected 23QG085 CRGO grain-oriented electrical steel.
A total of 62 tons of CRGO electrical steel coils were supplied with a thickness of 0.23 mm and a width of 950 mm.
Grain-oriented electrical steel is designed to provide favorable magnetic characteristics in the rolling direction, making it suitable for transformer core applications.
The low-loss electrical steel supported the manufacturing of the main transformer cores used in the 150kV solar step-up substation.
Third-party inspection confirmed that the supplied silicon steel met the project’s specified core-loss requirements.

2. CRNO Electrical Steel for Auxiliary Motor Cores

In addition to the main power transformers, the substation required materials for auxiliary electric motor components.
The project specified 50W400 non-grain-oriented electrical steel, with a nominal thickness of 0.5 mm and width of 1000 mm.
A total of 34 tons of CRNO electrical steel was supplied.
Unlike grain-oriented electrical steel, CRNO material is designed to provide relatively uniform magnetic properties in different directions within the sheet plane, making it suitable for rotating electrical machines.
The material was supplied for auxiliary motor core manufacturing, supporting the substation’s associated electrical equipment.

3. High-Conductivity T2 Copper Materials for Grounding and Winding Components

Copper materials played an essential role in the substation’s electrical connections and conductive systems.
The project required T2 copper strips and copper wires for grounding and winding applications.
The supply package included:

  • T2 copper strips: 1.5 × 300 mm
  •  T2 copper wires: Φ8 mm
  •  Combined procurement quantity: 36 tons

T2 copper offers high electrical conductivity and is commonly used in electrical components requiring efficient current transmission.
The supplied copper materials underwent third-party conductivity testing and satisfied the specified project acceptance criteria.
This helped ensure that the conductive materials met the requirements for transformer winding components and grounding connections.

4. ASTM A572 Gr50 Structural Steel for Outdoor GIS Equipment Supports

The outdoor GIS equipment and associated electrical infrastructure required structural steel supports with suitable strength and dimensional accuracy.
For these applications, the project selected ASTM A572 Gr50 high-strength structural steel.
A total of 98 tons of structural steel was supplied, including:

  •  HN300 × 150 × 6.5 × 9 mm H beams
  •  16# hot-rolled channel steel

ASTM A572 Gr50 offers a higher specified minimum yield strength than conventional ASTM A36 structural steel, supporting structural designs where strength is an important consideration.
The supplied sections met the project’s dimensional accuracy requirements and were used for outdoor electrical equipment supporting structures.

5. SA516 Gr70 Pressure Vessel Steel for Energy Storage Buffer Tanks

The project also included auxiliary pressure equipment associated with the energy storage system.
For the buffer tanks, SA516 Gr70 pressure vessel steel plates were specified.
The supply package included 57 tons of SA516 Gr70 plates in 10 × 1800 × 12000 mm dimensions, according to ASME SA516.
SA516 Gr70 is commonly used in welded pressure equipment where mechanical properties and pressure-retaining performance are important considerations.
The material supported fabrication of the project’s specified energy storage buffer tank components.

6. Alloy 625 Seamless Tubes for Corrosion-Resistant Sampling Pipelines

For sampling pipeline applications requiring corrosion-resistant materials, the project selected Alloy 625 nickel-based seamless tubes.
A total of 9 tons of Alloy 625 seamless tubes were supplied with dimensions of Φ38 × 4 mm according to ASTM B444.
Alloy 625 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy recognized for its corrosion resistance in a range of demanding industrial environments.
The material supported the fabrication of sampling pipelines requiring corrosion-resistant construction.

Quality Control and Third-Party Inspection

The project involved several distinct material categories, each requiring technical verification according to its intended application.
